“Slightly higher energy costs today are worth the investment if they lead to energy that is cleaner, reliable, affordable and safer down the road.”
Even before the disastrous oil spill now washing ashore in Louisiana, more than 80% of Virginians agreed with that statement regardless of their political persuasion. The finding comes from a poll released last month by the Watson Center for Public Policy at Christopher Newport University and funded by the Virginia Environmental Endowment. The same poll found that 77% of Virginians think the state should take steps to combat climate change. This after record snowfalls in much of the commonwealth (of course, NOAA reports that globally temperatures reached record highs this year).
Virginians aren’t anti-science luddites. They know the difference between climate and the weather. They know that pollution hurts people and wildlife. They know that clean energy from wind and solar has been available for decades and is long overdue in their communities.
You can help us make the case for a 21st-Century energy policy in Virginia. Come to one of our summer evening workshops—and bring a friend. Odds are your neighbors and coworkers already agree that something should be done.

Clean the Bay Day
Join the Chesapeake Bay Foundation for three hours in June to make your local waterway cleaner and healthier. The Chesapeake Bay and its rivers and streams need volunteers to pick up litter around shorelines and waterways. Last year, with the help of our organizing partners, 7,022 volunteers removed 102 tons of debris from 475 miles of shoreline throughout the state! We challenge and invite you to become part of the solution, join this powerful effort, and show that an unhealthy Bay is unacceptable! By boat or on foot, gather your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and groups for a fun day and a worthwhile way to Save the Bay.
